“SS” = Stainless Steel. A Siphon Pipe (also called a steam siphon, pigtail siphon, U‑type siphon, coil/pigtail tube) is a piping accessory used with pressure‑gauges, sensors or other instrumentation when you have high‑temperature fluids (steam, vapour, hot fluids). The siphon acts as a thermal barrier to protect the instrument.

Materials / Grades / Spec

• Typically made of stainless steel 304 / 304L, or 316 / 316L for better corrosion resistance. 

• Carbon Steel is also used in less harsh applications but for SS siphons you want stainless. 

• Welded / seamless tubing/piping, schedule of pipe (wall thickness) matters – sch 40, sch 80 etc. 

• Pressure and Temperature ratings will depend on grade, schedule, and length. Some data points: eg AISI 316L: up to ~260 bar @ 20 °C, decreasing with temperature; many SS siphons rated for working temps up to ~400 °C in steam applications.
